Book by Michael Menger

Michael Menger has been writing and directing for over 15 years.  He has extensive experience work-shopping original plays, as well as giving detailed and constructive feedback to playwrights during their creative journeys.

Inspired by numerous physical theater and modern dance companies Michael founded The Really BIG Dance Company in 1991. Dance pieces were created collectively and the company got a reputation for their unique sense of humor. (Most famous was the legendary dance piece: Cows.) The company was incorporated as a non-profit in 1995 under the new title The Really BIG Production Company Michael served as Artistic Director until 2001 when he chose to leave the Northwest to pursue a career in New York City.

While in Portland, Michael had the opportunity to direct opera, musicals and straight plays in a variety of venues; from hole in the wall theatres to the prestigious Portland Center for the Performing Arts in Portland, Oregon and the Pantages Theater in Tacoma, Washington. Regardless of the locale, Michael quickly became known for his inventive staging and highly physical productions.

In additon to directing and choreography, Michael has written several plays including: Tracks, The Really BIG Dance Company Goes To Hell!, The Holiday Show, The Pirate Show!, Out West!, and most recently Perfection, which he wrote, produced and directed for his wife Kellie Johnson, composer and lyricist for The Really Big Pirate Show!

Inspired by the intense musical compositions of Leonard Bernstein, the comedy of the great Gilbert & Sullivan operettas along with the classics of Beethoven, Mozart, Bach and Tchaikovsky, Kellie began composing and performing her original piano concerts across the country nationally and internationally on cruise ships all over the world. She brought her talented tinkling piano skills combined with an outrageously funny impersonation of Baby Snooks to the piano while teaming up with the famous David Levesque at the violin in the Nanette Fabray Show at the Casino Royale in Miami, Florida!

On land, Kellie starred in and composed original music for El Paso Blue by Octavio Solis for The Miracle Theatre in Portland, Oregon after it debuted at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. She received rave reviews for the original music she wrote and kudos for her stellar portrayal of Sylvie.

Normally an actress and a leading lady of the musical stage, Kellie also lent her talented skills as a pianist and composer to the Tygre’s Heart Shakespeare writing all original compositions for the production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream! She then found herself performing in and composing full-length original musicals with The Really BIG Dance Company in 1997 and continued writing, performing and serving as musical director for many of the original productions with The Really BIG Production Company until 2001 under the Artistic Direction of Michael Menger.

“Kellie Johnson not only composed original music for The Pirate Show, but she is set to star as the Parrot in the spoofy ‘The Pirate Show!” for the Really BIG Dance Company"

"To supply the narrative, even though she is dressed in a parrot suit, is Kellie Johnson. She has a strong, pleasing voice, just great for belting out Broadway tunes and keeping the tangles of the story clear.”

– Barry Johnson, The Oregonian.”

Not only the composer of The Really BIG Pirate Show!, Kellie is a consummate actress and since living in New York has starred in off-Broadway plays, regional musicals and performed in numerous fundraising events in Connecticut and Atlantic City at the Borgata Hotel Casino.
